SEASTAR has launched a pilot program for 2008. Organizations were invited to submit the names of young people to SEASTAR for one of the limited number of berths available for 2008.  A total of 21 trainees found placements on three vessels:
  1. A week-long coastal Nova Scotia sail-training experience in August aboard the classic schooner Peer’s Fancy with four trainees and a crew of two. .
  2. A one or two week Nova Scotia – Southern Maine experience in early August aboard the Schooner Virginia, which carries a trainee crew of 16, seven of whom were Nova Scotia trainees.
  3. A three-week Maritime Canada experience in July aboard the square – rigger, the S.V. Concordia.
By providing a range of options and a bursary, $1000 per person in the summer 2008 pilot program, SEASTAR was able to open the sail training experience to a diversity of youth. Trainees, their families and sponsors covered costs above the bursary including costs of their own travel, personal gear and other personal expenses, plus health insurance.

The Society is not involved with the development or delivery of the programs on board which is the responsibility of the ships themselves. The ships have their own application process and make the decision as to who they will take on the voyage and the details of the arrangements are a matter for the ship and the trainee to work out once the connection is made. SEASTAR will facilitate applications, following up with potential participants their parents and guardians, sponsors and the vessel and providing chaperones for the trainees where the point of embarkation/disembarkation was outside the country.

Very positive comments about their experience this summer have been received from several trainees and from the vessel operators. A more formal evaluation is now underway with trainees and with the vessels so that SEASTAR can learn from the experience of the pilot program and develop plans for 2009 and beyond.
